March 2004
CLUB NEWSLETTER

Southwest Scouts held its annual meeting February 7, 2004. Thanks to Bob Supplee for allowing the club to hold the meeting in his shop, Supplee’s 4WD. There were approximately 40 in attendance. The meeting began with introductions from around the room. The officers from the previous year were retained on a motion by Richard Thrasher, seconded by Gary Taber. Continuing are George Barwick, President; Jack McClary, Vice-President; and, Kim Barwick, Secretary/Treasurer.

Those in attendance discussed possible events for the coming year. Discussed was another outing on Gary Taber's land in May, June or after July 4th. The outing would be a weekend event with camping, socializing and some 4-wheeling. The event would be planned well in advance to give time to invite other clubs from neighboring states. Details will be worked out with Gary Taber.

It was suggested that the club contact Lynn Owens, owner of Frontier International, to see if he would be willing to allow the club to tour his facilities and collection of International vehicles and memorabilia. Wiley Sears agreed to contact Lynn and will try to schedule something in April on a Saturday after Easter (see main page for meeting plans).

George and Richard Thrasher discussed the possibility of holding a joint outing at the new off-road park near Ft. Scott, Kansas. The trip to the park would be 3-4 hours from Oklahoma City. The park claims that it hosts off-roading for all levels, stock to highly modified.

George asked for input regarding the events held over the past year. The club's off-road trip to Disney was not well attended. Those who went explained that there are several areas at Disney where stock vehicles can off-road. Also, stock vehicles can drive up to areas to watch the modified vehicles attempt the more difficult off-roading/rock climbing. Those who went last year with stock vehicles agreed that the area was accessible.

It was suggested that the club contact Scotty Hajek to see if he would be in favor of hosting an off-road event on his property. George will contact Scotty.

The decline in membership was discussed. SW Scouts used to have nearly 100 members but over the last few years membership has declined. In 2003 membership was only 37. Richard Thrasher and Gary Taber noted that other clubs are seeing the same declines in their membership. It was suggested that in the course of selling or trading a vehicle that owners consider giving a membership to SWScouts to the individual purchasing the International. Also suggested was inviting non-members to events throughout the year to encourage them to check us out. If they enjoy the club activities and atmosphere of others with similar interests, maybe they'll join the club.

The meeting ended with door prizes being awarded. A big THANK YOU to the following for providing door prizes: Supplee’s 4WD, Bill Johnson, and Gary Taber.

At the conclusion members enjoyed a meal of brisket, ham, and all the fixins.

Just a few if the Internationals driven to the meeting
