MAY 2002 CLUB NEWSLETTER

On April 27 & 28 members of Southwest scouts gathered at Pioneer RV Park with approximately 43 in attendance. The weather seemed to be against us Friday night and early Saturday morning but by the time everyone started showing up the skies began to clear and we had great weather for our meeting and outing.

The club provided hamburgers/hotdogs for lunch and then we got down to business. Jim Erb reported on the Mt Scott outing near Ft. Sill/Lawton on June 15 and 16. Those planning to attend will need to arrive at the Love's Convenience Store just off I-44 at the exit marked "To Medicine Park" which is exit 45. We'll leave Love's by l0am.

Lawton Area Hotels/Motels:
Super 8 Sandpiper- Exit 40A off I44 -2202 N Hwy 277

Ramada Inn - 601 NW 2nd Street-

Campgrounds:
Edgewater - 14 miles north on US 281 - 580-529-2663
Lake Lawtonka - 10 miles NW of Lawton - 580-529-2663

Jim is making lunch reservations at Meers Restaurant for which he'll need to get a count by the morning of the 15th for those planning to eat there. For the evening meal we may go to The Plantation.

The wildlife refuge is one of the largest in the area and there are several museums. Upon leaving Lova's we'll check out the Visitor's Center, museums, and then eat. After lunch well drive up Mt Scott. The park does not permit driving Mt Scott after dark. The drive up is paved, and there is NOT an area for off-road use. Jim advises that those making the drive be sure to have good brakes and to come down Mt Scott in low gear.

The agenda for the day may be adjusted to provide time to go up, take in the view, and relax a while. Whatever we don't get done Saturday we'll try to squeeze in Sunday in time that everyone can head home around noon.

You'll find enclosed in the newsletter an RSVP postcard. If you could, send it back and let us know whether you'll be joining us This will help with some of the advance planning that will need to be done.

Richard Thrasher reminded everyone that on August 10th Halstead, Kansas will have their "Old Settler's Day". The entry fee for the car/truck show is $10 for which participants receive 2 buttons good for the community meal provided. Lest year there were 43 Internationals entered in the car/truck show.

Jack McClary knows someone with land on the Canadian River in Rosedale (south of Purcell, Okla) who may allow the club to have an outing there. The event will probably be planned for the end of August. Camping will be primitive. More information will be provided when plans are more firm.

Bob Supplee's "Supplee 4WD Ent." has opened in its new location at 3615 East 1240 Service Road between Bryant & Sunnylane in the Business Park in the SW corner.

The Sunflower Regional Truck show in Junction City will be held October 11-14. A remote control Scout built by Terry Dishon is being raffled to raise money for the boys/girls club in Junction City. Barbara Wiens has raffle tickets if anyone is interested. Tickets are $1 ea or six for $5. The winner will be drawn on the 13th and does not have to be present to win.

Jim Erb suggested that members might like to attend the car show and cruise in El Reno June 7-8-9. On Saturday night Route 66 is closed for 1982 & older vehicles to cruise from 7pm to l0pm. Jim said he attended last year and was one of about 2 Internationals. A flyer about the event is enclosed. Club members who plan to cruise Saturday night can meet Jim at Adams Park in El Reno at 5:30pm (lost or need directions call Jim at 405-262-1743 or Cell #209-6690). There is a pre-ride briefing at 6:30pm in the same park near the football stadium. If you don't want to cruise, you can sit along the route to see the old classic cars.

Door Prizes were awarded to the following: Dominic Crook, Richard Thrasher, & Justin Biggers each won a hat; Barbara Wiens & Mae Dean Erb received t-shirts; Sean DeLany & Ken Butler got calendars; and Ryan Patterson was awarded a $25 gift certificate from Think Jeeps The items provided as door prises were received by the club from the SWFWDA Chili Challenge Raffle.

Beth Hajek won the 50/50 pot. Those present and willing donated $1 or more of which the winner received half of the total donations and the other half went to the club.

During the meeting, it was determined that the rain had done us in for Taber's land on Saturday. Ken Butler stepped up with plans to play on property of a friend of a friend along the Cimmaron River. Following the meeting those who wanted to had a great time at the beach! Thanks. Ken!!!

The wind helped to dry things up and the following day those attending were able to enjoy Gary's land. The ravines were still pretty soft and half of those there got stuck, some a little more stuck than others (Richard & George) Thanks for the fun Gary!

The club welcomed 6 new members, 1 former member, and one potential member. One of our new members found out about the club and our meeting through the web site www.binderblues.com managed by member Rowdy Gilpin - thanks for posting the Club's info.
